Summary vs. Analysis
When it comes to the difference between summary and analysis
of a story that an author has wrote, a summary is where a reader gives a brief
summary of what the story is about. When it comes to an analysis that is where
the reader tells you what they learned from the story, what the author was
trying to tell, and their point of view, it is sort of like a detailed review.
Summarizing an article or story is the basic standard it is
not very detailed and just goes over the core points or themes in the story
rather than expanding upon it. When it comes to analyzing the reader goes into
deeper detailed and tries to figure out the underlining message that the author
was trying to convey.
One of my favorite books is “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri,
when it comes to summarizing the book it is about a poet by the name of Dante
that goes through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven to find his love Beatrice, and he
is guided by Vigil. When it comes to analyzing this story it is very detailed
and goes through many stages and circles, a reader could also look at this and
see the different mindset of the people back in the 14th century
compared to the religious views of today.
Here is a link that talks about the difference between
summarizing and analyzing, it is an article from the writing center at the College
of Sequoias: http://writingcenter.cos.edu/2011/11/difference-between-analysis-and-summary/
