The problem that Swift identifies in his society is that the children of poor people in Ireland are being a burden on their parents and country. Swift made a modest proposal on how to make the children of Ireland be beneficial to the public. Swift talked about how along the streets of Ireland there were female beggars and took their multiple children with them to beg. Swift also believed that these children who either grew up as thieves for work, leave the country to fight for Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes. One suggestion that Swift made which I did not think was serious was when he stated that he believed a child who was just a little older than a one-year old should “contribute to the feeding, and partly to the cloathing of many thousands.” This part confused me and made me think “really” a one-year old? I do not think this is serious but rather this particular idea is indeed a little crazy, how can a one-year old work and do a job that only a grown adult can do?

Swift also spoke how his scheme would prevent voluntary abortions and the horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children; this is what I think Swift was making fun of. During a certain paragraph Swift was comparing the children that were being born to sheep, black cattle, and swine, and that one male will be sufficient to serve four females. Swift was writing like the infants and children were like animals and he kept talking about the child’s flesh like they were animals to be sold on a market. Swift purposed a plan where for each child the woman had she would get money and be fit for work until she produced another child, in my opinion; I believe that this purpose is sort of like welfare in our society.

When it comes to Swift’s evidence he had six suggestions that he wanted to do that would make his solution logical. He believed that if people followed his solution then there would be a lessen number of Papists, the poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own and money a thing unknown. The maintenance of an hundred thousand children, the constant breeders would be rid of maintaining their children after the first year; the food production would bring great customs and lastly, would be a great inducement to marriage.  Rhetorical Analysis

The video that I decided to use was from this year’s Super Bowl, it is the Budweiser Ad titled, “The Clydesdales: Brotherhood.” I think ad is very effective because after watching it both my mother and I went “awe”. It was cute and it targeted towards the audience of woman viewers but just because it was targeted towards women in my opinion, many men enjoyed the commercial as well. The advertisement was also to show you the bound between the man and the horse since in the commercial the man seemed to have no family and would constantly be with the horse.  The commercial had a lot of product placement in it since the Clydesdales horses are the one that pull the Budweiser and is the beers symbol in a sense. The idea of the horse ditching his uniform before running over to see his old friend is very adorable. The product-placement of this scene was lessened by a few seconds but it still had a powerful impact. 

Essay #1 Ideas

Essay #1

For my Essay I am going to use the second thesis about how Bartleby’s ghostly presence in the story is a result of how the narrator’s mind is breaking down. In truth Bartleby does not really exist and is not an actual scrivener. Bartleby thought is a representation of the how the narrator wishes to repress in order to become a more effective worker. 

I will talk about how the ghostly presence of Bartleby has begun to affect the narrator in a negative way and is slowly eating away at his mental state. In fact Bartleby does not really exist but instead the scrivener is actually an illusion of how the narrator wishes to be a better worker in his workplace which led his mind to create a false apparition. 

 In the Essay I will speak about how the mental state of the narrator is at the beginning of the story and how it changed at the end of the story. Along with this, how the narrator seems to have a breakdown because he is trying to become someone he is not and creates a false ghostly presence in order to keep him going to become his ideal self.

English 102: Close Reading of Bartleby

 Bartleby: Analysis of a Paragraph

“Good-bye, Bartleby; I am going—good-bye, and God some way bless you; and take that,” slipping something in his hand. But it dropped upon the floor, and then,—strange to say—I tore myself from him whom I had so longed to be rid of.” (Page 177)

I believe that this was a very important paragraph since the narrator was finally telling Bartleby good-bye and he was not going to deal with him anymore. The narrator has decided that since Bartleby will not leave him or quit him that the narrator must be the one as to quit Bartleby. The narrator decides to rid himself completely of Bartleby, by changing his office, moving somewhere else and if he finds Bartleby at his new places then he will go against Bartleby as if he was a trespasser. 

Another important part of this text was how the narrator slipped something into Bartleby’s hand but it just dropped to the floor. This could have many meanings as to if Bartleby is a ghost or simply a part of the narrator’s mind that has manifested due to his insanity. Bartleby could also be a figure that haunts the narrators mind and is a being or an image of how the narrator wishes himself to be. 

But further down the storyline a lawyer appears at the narrator’s new place and tells him that there is a man at his old place that refuses to do anything and that he prefers not to. That narrator wanted to call the place and see how Bartleby was doing but instead he did not though a few weeks later the landlord and a few tenants go to visit the narrator since Bartleby is now “haunting the building generally” according to the landlord.

English 102: Summary vs. Analysis

 Summary vs. Analysis

When it comes to the difference between summary and analysis of a story that an author has wrote, a summary is where a reader gives a brief summary of what the story is about. When it comes to an analysis that is where the reader tells you what they learned from the story, what the author was trying to tell, and their point of view, it is sort of like a detailed review. 

Summarizing an article or story is the basic standard it is not very detailed and just goes over the core points or themes in the story rather than expanding upon it. When it comes to analyzing the reader goes into deeper detailed and tries to figure out the underlining message that the author was trying to convey. 

One of my favorite books is “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri, when it comes to summarizing the book it is about a poet by the name of Dante that goes through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven to find his love Beatrice, and he is guided by Vigil. When it comes to analyzing this story it is very detailed and goes through many stages and circles, a reader could also look at this and see the different mindset of the people back in the 14^th century compared to the religious views of today.

English 102: Introductory Video

I am not that fond of showing my face online, call my old fashion or whatever, but I have this weird paranoia, too many times of my mom telling me to be careful with my identity online. :)! I was suppose to find a creative way in order to show myself and what better way than to show a video game that inspired me! When I was in High School, I wanted to do so many things, there was so much that interested me but when I learned more about the future careers, none of them seemed right or to fit what I liked. I can thank my brother for introducing me to this game known as Mass Effect. It was amazing and I could not help but fall completely and totally in love with it, after giving the game and the other two games much of my life (Several Months) and playing them over and over. I knew what I wanted to do with my life, and I always was writing and creating, so with a ton of research and time I know what I want to do with the rest of my life...and maybe one day a creation of mine will inspire another to do the same! :) So here is a video from Mass Effect 3. English 102: Week One Assignment

I made this Blog also for my College Course: English 102 so there will be many Blog Posts for that! Here is the first one! :)

Week One Assignment: Blog Post Good Reader and Good Writers.

1. When it came to what Nabokov though makes a good reader there was a list of ten things that he believed to be a good reader. The reader should belong to a book club, indentify himself or herself with the hero or heroine, concentrate on the social-economic angle, prefer a story with action and dialogue to one with none. Also the reader should have seen the book in a movie, should be a budding author, have an imagination, along with having a memory, a dictionary, and have some artistic sense. He believed that good readers have imagination, memory, a dictionary, and some artistic sense. Thought the college students that he was lecturing to leaned on emotional identification, action, and the social-economic or historical angle.

2. When it comes to if I agree completely with Nabokov on what he thinks makes a good reader, I would have to agree on certain points and disagree on the others. When it comes to the first point that Nabokov made that a good reader should be part of a book club, I disagree, I understand that being part of a group where you can see others opinions and thoughts are a great way to see other ways than your own but I do not think it is completely necessary. I do agree that a reader should identify themselves with the protagonists of the tale since it makes it feel more personal and gives it depth that is what many video gamers including myself do, could explain why I cried so many times during Mass Effect 3. I do not think that all good readers prefer books that have action in them and there is some books that do not even have the characters talking but instead are filled with amazing details and makes you feel what they are going through. I do not agree that a good reader should be a budding author, not everyone who is a good writer is a good reader and the same vice-versa.

3. When it comes to what characteristics that I believe to be a good reader I would have to say that the reader has to have an understanding of what is happening in the book. The reader also has to identify themselves with the hero or heroine of the tale to have an emotional or even just a connection to what is going on. A good reader should have a memory so that they remember what was happening rather than be confused throughout the story or have to go back and further to jog their memory of what was happening. Also a dictionary is a great thing to fully understand what the author was talking about and a good reader does not simply just read over the word and continue on.

4. When it comes to whether or not I believe myself to be a good reader, I would have to say that according to what I think I am a great reader! But if we are judging if I am a good reader according to Nabokov then I am a bad reader since I do not do many of the things that he believes to classify a good reader. I have an imagination, memory, dictionary, artistic sense and indentify myself with the hero or heroine of the story but the others that he listed I do not do or believe. Also does a good reader always read or it is just a characteristic that they have, like for example some people are good at Math while others are good at English, so does that matter if a reader is constantly reading that labels them as a good reader?
